Kalyamaholo Village Lights Up With Solar Power

Kyayi Subcounty, Gomba – After years in the dark, Kalyamaholo Village in Gomba District is finally switching on. Thanks to a new shared solar mini-grid installed under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) project, dozens of households and small businesses are now enjoying reliable, renewable electricity.

The solar system commissioned by Mr. Ben Kumumanya, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government was officially launched this week, marking a major milestone for the rural community.

For residents, the long wait is finally over.

“We were told it could take more than five years to get connected to the national grid. But today, we have light—and opportunity,” said one village resident.

From Darkness to Development

Currently, 47 households are connected to the solar power grid, but the system has the capacity to support up to 200. Already, small-scale enterprises such as welding shops, salons, and carpentry workshops are springing up—fueling local employment and improving household incomes.

“This is about more than just light. It’s about powering our future,” said Mr. Kumumanya during the commissioning ceremony.

The solar scheme reflects the broader vision of the LEGS project: to unlock rural economic potential and raise household incomes through strategic public investment.

Phase One: Gomba's Success Stories

Kalyamaholo’s solar grid is part of a bigger package of infrastructure investments delivered under Phase I of LEGS. Other key achievements in Gomba include:
- Rehabilitation of the 30.3km Kyabagamba–Kigayaza–Kyetume–Kyayi Community Access Road
- Construction of market sheds in Maddu
- Development of milk collection centers in Kifampa and Kigenzi
- Expansion of artificial insemination services for livestock farmers
- Rehabilitation of Rwakibira earth dam
- Installation of three biogas demonstration sites

These interventions are enhancing agricultural productivity, improving market access, and promoting environmental sustainability.

“This is transformation happening at the grassroots,” said The Chief Administrative Officer. “LEGS has brought real change.”

Looking Ahead: Phase II on the Horizon

During the launch, Mr. Kumumanya confirmed that Gomba will be considered in the upcoming Phase II of LEGS implementation. The project jointly funded by the Islamic Development Bank, the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, and the Government of Uganda is currently being implemented in 17 districts, with more expected to join.

“We are not stopping here,” said Mr. Kumumanya. “There is still work to do, and Gomba will remain a key focus.”

For the residents of Kalyamaholo, this initiative marks a turning point. Clean energy, local enterprise, and hope are on the rise.

“With electricity now in the village, our children can read at night, and our businesses can grow,” said a youth leader. “This is how development starts.”
