GOMBA DISTRICT STRENGTHENS THE EMPOWERMENT OF YOUNG WOMEN THROUGH THE DREAMS TRANSITION PROJECT

Gomba District is witnessing a remarkable transformation among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) through the DREAMS Transition Project, implemented by the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) under the Mpigi Cluster. Covering Gomba, Mpigi, and Butambala districts, the project seeks to accelerate HIV epidemic control by strengthening the social and economic empowerment of vulnerable girls aged 10 to 24.

Over the past two years, the DREAMS project has enrolled 2,262 out of 2,264 targeted girls, achieving a 99.9% success rate a reflection of both the project’s efficiency and the district’s strong coordination. In its first year, nearly all targeted beneficiaries were reached, and in the second year, the number surpassed expectations due to enhanced community sensitization and inspiring success stories from earlier participants.

Each girl benefited from a comprehensive package of health and empowerment services, including HIV testing and counseling, mental health screening, access to PrEP, treatment for sexually transmitted infections, gender-based violence response, and family planning services. Many also received post-violence care and educational or vocational support, ensuring that no girl was left behind.

The majority of participants completed empowerment programs such as No Means No, Journey Plus, and Stepping Stones, which equipped them with confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. Additionally, 535 girls were trained in short-term vocational skills such as tailoring, hairdressing, and baking, along with financial literacy. Of these, 138 received start-up kits that enabled them to establish small businesses within their communities.

One notable success story is that of Mary Nabunya from Maddu, who began a small business through the Start Now initiative. She shared, “DREAMS gave me the skills and courage to start my own business. I can now support myself and inspire other girls to work hard and believe in themselves.”

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Kizito Ivan, the Gomba District Vice Chairperson, commended the program for its positive impact on the community. “I want to appreciate this program initiative because it is truly transforming the lives of our community members,” he said. “I encourage the implementing team to continue engaging and inspiring other partners to invest in Gomba, especially in empowering our women. When women are empowered, the entire community thrives.”

Ms. Kisakye Florence, the District Probation Officer, also expressed gratitude for the collaboration between IDI and the district. “I thank all members for attending this important engagement, and I sincerely appreciate IDI for working closely with the Probation Office,” she noted. “We have witnessed the tangible impact of this program in our communities, and your support to the district has been commendable. Let’s continue strengthening this partnership for even greater impact.”

However, despite these milestones, challenges remain. The second year recorded a decline in enrollment among girls aged 15–19 due to early employment, mobility, and transactional relationships issues that underscore the economic vulnerabilities within this age group.

Mrs. Nakalanda Prossy, IDI Gomba DREAMS Officer, praised the district’s consistent support. “We appreciate the district for providing a safe space for girls to learn, heal, and grow. It is this partnership that makes transformation possible,” she remarked.

The District Community Development Officer, Mr. Byaruhanga Arthur, emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration. “We must protect our girls from domestic violence and early exploitation. Most of these challenges stem from family factors,” he said, adding, “We request IDI to harmoniously hand over all data and tools to aid district-level monitoring and ensure continuity.”

As the project transitions, stakeholders are advocating for sustained mentorship, livelihood support, and investment in community structures to preserve the gains achieved. The DREAMS Transition Project has not only empowered young women economically but also advanced Gomba District’s contribution to national HIV prevention efforts under the 95-95-95 targets.
