UNBOUND AND GOMBA DISTRICT TRANSFORM SCHOOLS THROUGH EDUCATION AND WASH PROJECTS

On 10th November 2025, Gomba District stakeholders, in partnership with Unbound Kampala, conducted a field visit to inspect newly completed projects under the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) component in the subcounties of Mpenja, Kyegonza, and Kabulasoke. The visit covered a range of community development infrastructures including toilet, water harvesting tank, and a classroom block aimed at improving learning conditions and sanitation standards in local schools.

Unbound Kampala is a community development organization dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the rights of children in partnership with sponsored families and local governments. Operating primarily in the South-Central districts of Gomba, Kyotera, Masaka, Mityana, Mpigi, Rakai, and Wakiso, the organization’s vision is “Stable Happy Families”, fostering self-sufficiency through community empowerment.

The organization’s initiatives address key issues such as child abuse, education, livelihoods, and sanitation in hard-to-reach and vulnerable communities. With over 55% of its budget dedicated to education, Unbound supports more than 10,000 beneficiaries, ensuring quality learning outcomes through tuition support, scholastic materials, mentorship, and community awareness campaigns. Through its ICOLEW program, parents and children benefit from both formal and non-formal education, while special literacy classes are offered for learners beyond Primary Three who still struggle to read and write.

A recent Unbound study emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among parents, teachers, communities, and local leaders in improving education outcomes. The findings revealed that 88% of learners required financial assistance, 79% needed academic guidance, and 50% benefited from counseling services underscoring the critical role of holistic support in education.

In Gomba District alone, 1,782 sponsored children (904 males and 878 females) across 1,745 households benefit from Unbound programs within the subcounties of Kyegonza, Mpenja, Kabulasoke, and Kifampa.

During the field visit, stakeholders inspected key WASH interventions, including a newly constructed five-stance pit latrine at Serumbe Primary School in Mpenja Subcounty, Golola Parish. The project significantly improved sanitation and learning conditions at the school, where facilities had previously been dilapidated.

The Headteacher, Mr. Kibiina Idris, expressed his gratitude, saying,

“We are very grateful for this support which came at a time when our resources were limited and our sanitation facilities were in dire condition. We appreciate Unbound and the district for this impactful partnership.”

At Saali Primary School, Unbound constructed a classroom block to promote a conducive learning environment, while at Bukandula Primary School, a 5,000-liter water harvesting tank was installed to support school WASH activities.

The District Chairperson, Mr. Kiviiri Godfrey, commended the organization’s contributions, noting,

“We thank Unbound for the tremendous work done to uplift our schools and improve the welfare of our learners. Such partnerships directly complement the government’s vision of promoting quality education for all Ugandans.”

The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Ms. Nakatte Edith, also lauded Unbound’s initiatives, urging for continued collaboration. She remarked,

“I thank Unbound for their outstanding work in our schools and encourage the organization to continue working closely with district departments to ensure a harmonized and aligned vision toward improved service delivery for our communities.”

Through these interventions, Unbound continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving education, hygiene, and livelihoods in Gomba District a partnership that exemplifies community-driven development and sustainable transformation.
