UNBOUND AND GOMBA DISTRICT STRENGTHENS ECONOMIC RESILIENCE AMONG FARMERS THROUGH COFFEE DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENSION SERVICES
On 10th November 2025, Gomba District stakeholders, in partnership with Unbound Kampala, conducted a field visit to inspect beneficiary coffee farmers across the subcounties of Mpenja, Kyegonza, and Kabulasoke. The exercise aimed at assessing progress among households benefiting from the ongoing coffee seedling distribution program a key livelihood initiative strengthening economic resilience and poverty eradication within the district.
Unbound Kampala is a community development organization dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the rights of children in partnership with sponsored families and local governments. Operating primarily in the South-Central districts of Gomba, Kyotera, Masaka, Mityana, Mpigi, Rakai, and Wakiso, the organization’s vision “Stable Happy Families” focuses on empowering communities to achieve self-sufficiency.
With over 19% of its annual budget dedicated to economic strengthening, Unbound supports more than 10,000 beneficiaries through initiatives that promote livelihoods, education, and improved living conditions. In Gomba, the organization’s livelihood and resilience program has become a cornerstone for rural transformation, providing coffee seedlings, extension services, and continuous supervision to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and income growth.
Through its approach of organizing households into Self-Help Groups (SGs) largely composed of mothers, Unbound fosters group learning, financial discipline, and collective planning. These SGs are further guided by Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) committees that track household progress toward achieving sustainable income-generating activities (IGAs).
In Gomba District alone, over 222 beneficiaries have directly benefited from income-generating activities across 1,745 households in the subcounties of Kyegonza, Mpenja, Kabulasoke, and Kifampa. Each household has received coffee seedlings and commercial guidance, building a foundation for long-term economic independence and food security.
During the field visit, the team inspected key farmers demonstrating successful coffee establishment and management practices.
Mr. Kakoto Sabiti, a father of two from Luwangala-Jumba, Mpenja Subcounty, now managing a 3-acre coffee plantation, expressed his appreciation:
“I am very grateful for the coffee seedlings. My garden is now flowering, and I’m about to reap. I thank Unbound and the District for the extensive support that has boosted my financial status. I pray for even more support, especially in irrigation.”
Similarly, Ms. Nakibuule, a single mother of four from the same parish, with a 1-acre coffee garden already flowering, commended the initiative, saying:
“I thank Unbound and the District for the support that ensures my children remain in school. As a single mother, supporting their education has been difficult, but with this program, I see a brighter future.”
The District Production Officer, Mr. Kiddu Ben, praised Unbound’s contributions, noting:
“We thank Unbound for the tremendous work done to uplift our farmers and improve the welfare of our children. I urge our farmers to embrace district initiatives such as irrigation and the Parish Development Model to further strengthen this progress.”
The Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Ronald Katende, also lauded the collaboration, stating:
“The partnership between the District and Unbound is improving service delivery and transforming lives. As the President’s Office, we remain committed to supporting and scaling up such impactful interventions.”
Through its sustained investment in agriculture and livelihoods, Unbound Kampala continues to fortify household resilience and empower communities to achieve lasting transformation. The organization’s support for coffee farming not only enhances income security but also cements Gomba District’s position as a growing hub for quality coffee production in the region.
